I can play a little bit of acoustic guitar and plan to get really good over the summer..
but if I ever wanted to play electric guitar, what would the difference be, besides needing an amp and the sound?

one uses electricity and circuitry to generate sound and an acoustic uses its shape to make sound. myfakeemailaddress77

The acoustic has a softer sound. Electric has a much more deeper, raspier sound. I play electric and have played some acoustic from what I know on the electric. The electric has more options since the neck is usually longer than an acoustic. PrettyKitty

nothing besides the lack of a shell so an amp is needed to produce sound. everything else is the same. hello

Nothing really. Electric guitars usually have more frets so you can play higher notes. They also have tone and volume controls for more variation of sound. Chris Greene

Electric guitars are generally heavier than acoustics since the electric has a solid body.

You can play a lot further down the fretboard on an electric since the amplification will make the higher notes much more audible than on an acoustic.

Electric guitars are also usually easier to play since they use thinner strings so it’s easier to hold the strings down. Especially with barre chords.

An acoustic guitar has the sound for a country style song, while an electric has a sound more for rock and metal. Typically you can play an electric guitar faster than an acoustic guitar, but that isn’t always the case. Fezzz

Electric guitars will require a sound amplifier to project the sound effectively while Acoustic guitars can stand alone. Ace glenn Gonzales

Well first off you have the obvious: acoustic guitars have a hollow inside for amplifying vibrations to make them more audible, whereas electic guitars have pickups which convert the vibrations into an electrical signal and back into sound when passing through the speakers on an amp.
Whoever says that they are basically the same, however, is sorely mistaken. While it is still a guitar, yes, acoustics (generally) have fewer frets and are much more difficult to play as the strings are thicker and more difficult to push down. Electric guitars are generally easier to play, and your mistakes (provided they are somewhat minor) can be covered up with distortion and other effects. They are also used for different genres, for example acoustics= country, acoustic (there’s a shocker) etc whereas electrics= Also some country, blues, metal, rock, classic rock, punk, alternative etc. Both are beautiful instruments necessary to create a multitude of different sounds used by dfferent bands and such l.
