What’s the difference between a regular speaker and a guitar speaker?

I bought two cheap tower speakers (like what you would connect to a receiver), and I’m curious what the difference is between the 8″ driver of regular speakers and the drivers in guitar amps / cabinets.

Btw, I’m thinking about refitting (probably just one of) the towers I just bought with new drivers because one of the midranges doesn’t work. I intend to play loud guitar sounds with my Ibanez through a GT-10 -> receiver.

Thanks.

The basic difference is that a guitar amp is a speaker and an amplifier with inputs. a speaker needs a power source to drive and amplify the input signal. other than that it is basically the same as a reciever/amplifier/speaker combination. plug in and play!

There are some other differences that are specific to make the guitar sound a certain way, so don’t expect the best sound quality that you would get out of a good guitar amp. Speckfisher425

By regular speakers I’m assuming you mean Stereo Speakers?

Well there a few differences between them but really the biggest differences is the power in which can can be pumped into them and the frequency they are best suited for.

Generally Stereo Speakers have smaller magnets and can’t handle 100W 16ohms of power. Some might say 100w but they won’t handle that long and if they could the stereo powering them wouldnt pump that much to them.

Also stereo speakers can handle a wider range of sound. There are stereo towers with a 2 or 3 way speaker configuration but usually they can still pump out mids, lows, and highs out of one speaker.

Guitar speakers are mostly mid range speakers however there are some speakers that are good at lower - mid range sounds. They can handle a large amount of watts for a long time and range from 10-18ohms. Most stereo speakers are only 2-8ohms.

Save up your money and just get a used 4×12 cab with a guitar head for 300$. Nonpartisan
