What is the best way to start learning guitar?

ToryAnn asked:

I have an electric guitar that I’ve owned for years, and I really want to start learning on it, but I haven’t had the time or patience. I’ve been playing a viola for ten years, so the whole stringed instrument thing isn’t novel, but the constant need to play multiple notes at once to form a chord is. Do you have any tips on how to kick start my education? Thanks!

PluckandPlayGuitar has free video based lessons for absolute beginners and assume you know nothing or close to nothing.

It takes you step by step through the basic guitar chords one by one. There’s also lesson on guitar scales, techniques and some easy songs to play. hexv

CHORDS CHORDS CHORDS!!! the best way is to memorize a few chords (D,F,Em,C,G,A,E,Em) and see what songs you can play from there then the rest should just come naturally. once you learn one song there is no stopping you from learning more. google beginer guitar tabs and go from there Ethan

The best way is to find a private instructor or class.
There are tons of guitar lesson websites and youtube videos, but it is a lot more effective to have a private instructor because then you will get a lesson plan according to your abilities, and the instructor can guide you and correct your mistakes. This is especially helpful at the beginning to have a proper learning plan.
I took guitar lessons and classes for about 6 years, then i just started learning by myself. Kris

Definitely get a private instructor. Direct interaction with a fellow guitar player does wonders for learning guitar. If you’re not too fond of that, youtube videos are a great start, or picking up a book such as this as an example for learning the basics. Norris

The way I did it, which worked.

    - Practice the simpler open chords, then move on to harder (For the beginner anyway) barre chords. Make sure you learn what’s going on when you do it too.

    - Do chromatic scale patterns, maybe even for just 15 minutes a day. You will be surprised how quickly you improve your technical ability.

    - Play songs! My first song was Manic Depression by Jimi Hendrix. Of course, I didn’t do the solo part, but that’s why you picked up a guitar in the first place! To play songs, and maybe make up your own! Try and emulate something you hear on a CD.

And remember, if you’re finding a passage really difficult, I can’t stress enough. Slow it down, break it into easy chunks, and gradually pick up speed. This will stop you from making a mess! Although I guess you know this already :\

Most of all; have fun :D EvilDead138
