What is a really good audio recording machine or software for recording guitar?

if you are on a Mac you can go with Logic Express. Garageband is free on Mac.
For Pc: Get an audio interface. Most of them come with recoding software and plugins. Look here for more info:

I would recommend that you look into purchasing something like a Line6 POD:
