What is a good guitar distortion software to use?

I’m looking for some software so I can plug my guitar into my computer, then distort it with the program, and have it come out the speakers. I’ve tried GuitarFX already, but couldnt get it to work.

buy amplifier. Softwares suck
Obviously, guitar pedals/amps are the way to go, but computer software offers much versatility. Native Instruments Guitar Rig is pretty dope. It comes as a “VST” plug-in, were it is applied as an effect over any specific track. You might also need a “Host” application like Acid Pro, or Pro Tools. The link below explains it better than me.
You can get an effects processor from Boss or Digitech for the same price as software. This typically have between 12-20 different types of amp models to choose from and you can run it into your computer just the same. You will have to just get another guitar cable too. I agree that running through software sucks and your best sound will come directly from an Amp.
I really dig the Toneport UX2 - it has amp, cabinet, and effects emulators that span 4 decades. You can combine them and create your own sound for whatever you want. The Toneport acts as a sort of mini mixer, because it has 2 1/4inch inputs, 2 XLR inputs, headphone volume and input, and two gains. The program also comes with bass presets and vocal presets. I even plugged a key board into it once and was able to get an amazing grand piano sound out of it.
When I bought it, it was $250 but I think you can get one for $150 now. It has tons of was that you can get the perfect distorted sound. I record with it around the clock, and I also know that its on hand in a lot of professional studios.
Try Guitar Rig or Amplitube
If you want good distortion buy the Metal Muff w/ top boost. I have it and i have no complaints quite possibly the best distortion pedal and only costs about $80-90.
