What are guitar scales and arpeggios and how can I learn them?
Aaron asked:
Im not a beginner at guitar really. But im looking to go further in guitar. I want to learn how to play much harder faster stuff like solos. Is there a site or a book I should get?

The Guitar Grimoire (Scales/Modes) is the best. Matt
I suggest checking YouTube to learn about the Modes (Ionian, Dorian, Phrygian, Lydian, Mixolydian, Aeolian, Locrian). These are by far the best way to improve your playing and understanding of the fret-board.
I agree with the Grimoire comment. There is a LOT of info there! Definitely something you should buy. I included a link to the book in resource box.
Good luck and Happy Practicing! j
At A Glance Scales and Modes is a great one, Flying Fingers, Monster Scales and Modes, Artful Arpeggio’s
Those are the best books I know of for what your looking for. The Modes already stated (Ionian (major), Dorian, Phrygian, Lydian, Mixolydian (dom. 7th), Aeolian (Natural Minor), and Locrian). And the two scales that are note worthy are the Pentatonic and the American Blues scale.
With the modes you’ll also want to learn the keys and how the Modes are arranged with them.
Arpeggio’s are the arrangement of notes of a chord, done as single notes, instead of strumming. Such as the C Major (CEG) Playing it

Anyways sorry for the long winded answer.
Hope some of it helped Logan Moon
Aaron,
This topic can seem like a total mess of complexity with a whole bunch of complex names and long memorization sessions but it doesn’t have to be. Let me help.
Here’s my simple method for beginning scales the FUN way. Here’s what you want to do:
- download a blues backing track in a particular key (e, a are good for starters)
- get a chart of the pentatonic scale
- play any note in the scale over the backing track
Its great fun being able to make up your own lead parts.
If you ever get stuck and can’t do something you want to do in a song, then practice THAT. You’ve got built in motivation to get it right.
If you want to learn more details there is a great website, I’ll include a link below so you can investigate this stuff in more detail.
Good Luck learning the scales,
