How long does it take to learn to play the guitar?

I would like to play the electric guitar, but that because I prefer the sound of the electric guitar then the acoustic. I was looking at some different started packs, and I’m not to sure what I’m should be looking at. If someone can give me some advice on a starter pack to get? Also a good book? And if someone can tell me how I should learn how to play, preferably self taught?
