What kind of guitar strings should I use?

I want to start playing guitar, and I have my mom’s old guitar. The only problem is, it hasn’t been used in years, so it needs to be restrung. What kind of string should I use? I’m not even sure if it’s steel string or nylon, because the three deep strings are steel, and the three high ones aren’t. ????? I want to play Johnny Cash type songs. What string should I use? I’ll try to get more info on brand, as well as pics up lkater.

Is it possible to tune a 6 string ukulele to a standard guitar tunning and have it work like a mini-guitar?

How far from the neck of an acoustic guitar should the strings be?
