Your best bet is to take at least a few lessons with a live teacher in the beginning. You need feedback from an experienced guitarist who can coach you on the correct way to hold the guitar, place your fingers on the fretboard to form chords and notes, how to tune your guitar, and so on. Otherwise the likelihood is that you will develop bad habits that will hold you back in the long run from becoming as good a guitarist as you could be.

Check out the links below. Good, free, beginning lessons.

My experience with computer-based lessons, which was my first with guitar, was that I didn’t really learn much and my guitar was soon gathering dust. Taking a course at my community college really helped me make progress, overcome practice difficulties and inspired me to continue. I would highly recommend personal lessons on some level.
