How much would a custom guitar built like this cost?

Johnathan asked:

I want a custom made guitar where the neck is a twelve string neck. The lowest six strings would be like a standard guitar, going down the neck and the body, the upper six strings would be like the lower six, except in reversed order and stop with the neck. The lower six would be for strumming like regular, but the upper six would be for tap strumming specifically. How much would that cost to have made?

It sounds like you could probably pull that off with a 12 string guitar - the only custom work that would be necessary would be the nut and the saddles.

Probably not more than $100 on top of the cost of the guitar.

The neck is going to have more tension on it due to basically having two full sets of strings on it (12 strings are generally 1 full set + one small string next to each).

You might want to start with a guitar that has dual truss rods to allow better adjustment.

Sounds like a wacky idea though - I say go for it!!!

what you should do is get a double neck instead of trying to make some crazy extra wide custom neck that you cant get your fingers all the way around.

.Try getting a 12 string kit and build it yourself to your own personal spec. you will be much more satisfied and will be better than a normal 12 string with random strings.

It can really vary but you should put that question to the guitar community at

What you are describing sounds like a Chapman Stick.

As far as a custom cost, it completely depends on the wood, electronics, inlays, binding, paint, etc.

Either way, you’re probably looking at several thousand dollars.

    Good luck.
