Go to Musicians Friend and get a “starter” guitar (like a Squire) and amp package. My son did that and then kept upgrading as he got better and better. Some people pay alot of money before they know how to play and either never learn or find out that their style and the guitar they have don’t jive. You won’t have any problem staying under $400. Also, if you don’t like the idea of a starter type package you can try Craigslist…there are always musicians needing money and selling their gear. Best of luck.

I second the idea of getting an electric guitar starter kit. Some of these packages are really good for beginners because they come with the guitar, amp, lesson DVD, strap, picks, tuner, and more. They are a good deal for someone starting out, and much less than $400.

Check out these 3 good ones:

dont buy a starter kit, youll be utterly dissapointed and never play

go for some type of epiphone or higher end squier

those would be my suggestion for guitars, something like those.
but for an amp there only one choice for a begginner to an intermediate player that offers aa good sound and so many effects and thats this one

i have personal experience with that amp and it is absolutely amazing. dont let the 15 watt power reading fool you, it gets loud

and theres still a little money left (approximatly 40$) but youll nead misc stuff also, like a strap and picks and a insturment cable.

if you nead anymore help just mail me. id love to help you out.
