Ronnie Frown asked:

I’ve played bass for a long time, but I know some guitar basics like chords. Recently bass hasn’t been enough company with my singer songwriter aspirations. How long does it take to play well enough to accompany myself? Am I better off just joining a band as vocalist?
HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO PLAY WELL ENOUGH TO ACCOMPANY MYSELF???

How long is a piece of string?
Seriously, it’s kind of an unanswerable question. If you can string chords together, with instant changes. If you can play different strumming patterns and rhythms and sing at the same time, then you can accompany yourself. When you write your songs, can you sing your tune and work out what chords you should use?. The thing about being a singer/guitarist is that it givs you a degree of independence.
    Hope this helps.

Six months is more than adequate. You play bass so you should have the necessary finger strength to play chords.
