How much should a good dependable starter guitar cost? I don’t need anything fancy! I just want something that doesn’t sound like crap!

about 100-299 for basic guitars. and it takes about 1-4 months depending on how fast you learn and how consistent you are. if you practice everyday for about half an hour you should be good. guitarboy626

Whenever I’ve had first-time-ever students (some of whom didn’t even have a guitar yet), I can usually get them to play 8 common chords (E A D G C Em Am Dm) and strum a simple rhythm within 30 minutes.

After that it’s a matter of practice… I typically teach them Neil Young’s “Rockin’ In The Free World” as a first song, and most can do it by the following week (unless they didn’t practice)

It really shouldn’t take more than a couple months to be able to strum out simple chord progressions with basic rhythms and at a moderate tempo. I would highly recommend a teacher though. They can spot little things in your technique that may inhibit your playing later; correcting you before they become bad habits. LucasMan
