Geshan asked:

How many years should I practice acoustic and then progress on to electric? I have never played a guitar before, but I really want to learn!

it is unnecessary to start out on an acoustic, if you want to play the electric guitar then play the electric guitar, it’s as simple as that. The Wizard

Learning how to play on an acoustic guitar will build up your fingers really good. And you can hear your mistakes way easier while you better your playing. I would suggest practicing daily for at least 3-4 weeks then start playing on an electric. But don’t get rid of your acoustic. You should always have one of each so you could play them both.

remember to always sing when you play. or talk to someone when you play. That way you learn how to play with your subconcious and not your consious mind. Learning how to play subconsiously is the key to becoming good. I know i spelled subconcious wrong but oh well.

remember when you press the frets don’t actually touch the fret with your finger just get really close. and press firmly. if there is a buzzing noise when you play its because you aren’t pressing hard enough.

hold the pick between the fat part of your thumb, and the outside of the very last knuckle on your pointer finger. Bend the end of your pointer finger in so it is totally parallel to your thumb. pick by moving your fingers, and a little movement in the wrist. but dont move your arm. and don’t pick with just your wrist.

if you play sitting down dont rest your left elbow on your leg, it will totally throw you off when you go to play standing up

if it is hard for you to reach to play some notes tilt the guitar up towards your head more

keep your left thumb behind your middle finger on the neck.

Dont make a habit of letting your wrists be bent. It will hinder you in the long run

make sure you always pick up, down, up down. Unless you get some really technical songs later on but start off alternate picking up and down dont just pick up up up up or down down down down because that will make you lose all your speed and have to relearn everything later on.

if you tap your foot to keep rhythm make sure you tap your left foot. not the foot with the leg the guitar sits on.

your strap should be adjusted so that you can almost see your waist when you stand up

practice songs piece by piece dont try the whole song and have it forgotten by the time you get to the end. focus on one part, memorize it, and practice it till you get it down. play it slow once or twice till you remember it, then play it at full speed. Dont practice slow more than twice or you will make a mental block in your mind to where it will be harder for you to play it full speed.

Dont set your wrist anywhere on the guitar. dont let any of your fingers on your right hand touch the guitar. your right hand should never come into contact with the guitar.

dont pick your fingers up high in-between notes. Only pick them up barely off the strings. It will help you with your speed later on.

if thats not enough rules let me know. i know a bunch more :P may seem overwhelming but it all will help you The Bodacious Stud
