My boyfriend is a partial quadriplegic. He used to love to play the guitar, but he doesn’t have really good use of his hands anymore. Does anyone have any idea where we could find a guitar that he could play? I would really appreciate any ideas.

Hey there. I’ve been contacted recently about building a guitar for a someone with the same needs. I’ve been searching through the web looking for ways to solve the hardest problem for quadriplegics: tuning.

From what I’m starting to see, quadriplegics are really well suited for playing slide on a dobro or electric steel guitar. The slide or tone bar can be held or even attached to the fretting hand. As long as the strings are tuned to a chord, it’s almost impossible to play a wrong note.

As for where to find a guitar like that, any music store that sells guitars should have dobros or lap steel guitars. Both are designed to lay in your lap. The tuners point up for easier access.

Hope that helps and gets you off to a good start.
