I’m brand new to the mac, i purchased my first about a week ago, and I love it. But I’m trying to record my guitar directly into garage band, using the microphone jack on the back of my iMac. I don’t want to use the built in microphone, cause its not good enough quality for what I’d like to do. Is there any way to record directly into garage band, or some other free software that I can use to record directly?

Just get a 1/4″ to 1/8″ adapter from Radio Shack. The Mac will take care of the pre-amp.

i would get a line 6 toneport gx. its only $50 and its got tons of amp models and effects. plus there will be no lag in recording.

I got the adapter that the other dude mentioned from Radio Shack (1/4″ to 1/8″ but be sure to get mono - there is no need for stereo and it’s twice as much!) then went into System Preferences and changed the mic setting from “Internal” to “Line In” (under the input tab). It sounds awesome!

One tip - record with no effects, then add the effects when you are done recording. That way you can change the effect if you don’t like it. In GarageBand you can always add effects if you record clean, but you can never take them away if you record with them on in the first place.

    Enjoy!
