How can I learn to play the guitar without anyone teaching me?
Rasheia S asked:
I know people say that you have to go to an expert to teach people how to play a guitar.I get tired because it takes a long time when other people try to teach me and then I start to get bored. So if there is anyone one that can give me advice on how I could play the guitar on my own that would be a really good help.(Please)

iGarage may help You and Youtube!:) Cold_World
I never had a lesson. Friends gave me tips, and still do.
Other than plucking out melodies most of what i play are power chords.
Check Youtube for tips and lessons, and remember to have fun. gnarly guy
to rasheia: how to learn to play the guitar by yourself, first you get a guitar, then you will need a tuning meter. then you will need to tune the guitar to the standard “E” note. then you will need a chord book that has all your basic first and second major chords in it. or you can buy a video that would be more revealing as to hand and finger positions you will need to learn. It is easy to become discouraged because it will cause your fingers to hurt while you develope calus’s on the tips of your fingers. Nothing worth while is easy. guitar is no exception. after you learn your basic forms you can watch and listen to others and decide which way you want to proceed. You will one day ask yourself
Do i want to sound like this one? or that one? or do i just want to create my own sound. Just trying to b helpful. you will need some thin gauge picks 2! Good lucky rasheia! Michael
Go on youtube or find a good online instruction site or DVD from a music store. Start by learning some basic chords and a few songs you like so you can actually enjoy them and feel like you’re making progress, but don’t stop there. Then move on to understanding the layout of the guitar neck, what the notes are all the way up the neck and then move on to learning scales. The minor pentatonic scale in all 5 positions is a good place to start if you like blues and rock because you can start improvising in any key based on that scale. Understanding music theory and how the scales and chords go together is critical.
It would be a lot easier with a good teacher giving you some structure and guidance, but you certainly can learn it on your own if you can’t afford a teacher. I think if you get bored and don’t have the patience for a teacher though, you might not have the patience to stick with it and learn it on your own either. My daughter heard me playing Sweet Home Alabama and said she wanted me to teach her guitar. I started with basics and she said, “no, I want to play that song”. So, I taught her to play that song. Now she knows how to play one song on the guitar. You get what you wish for I guess. OnTheRock
pray to God to give you the talent and it will be given to you…also either by ear or learn at your own pace on the computer…thats how i did it WITH ALOT OF HELP FROM GOD!!! Robert
You should buy a beginner level or level 1 guitar book. I would go to a music store and see which book I can understand the best, and buy it. It is especially easy to teach yourself to play an instrument if you have some experience with people trying to teach you before. GingerSnap
The reply given by Gingersnap is on the right course. Get the booklet, Hal Leonard’s Beginning Guitar Method Book One. Inside are instructions in tuning, maintenance, basic chords, and, most important, basic music theory with exercises that can advance your expertise if you are willing to work at it.
Do not expect to play like a professional guitarist within the first week or even the first year. Much time, practice, research, and study must go into making a fine guitar player. If you are willing to put forth the effort then you will eventually excel at the guitar.
If you have the motivation enough to move beyond the painful fingertips until the needed calluses come then you have the inclination to learn how to play. Once you’ve mastered some basic chords it is essential that you get with other advanced guitarists and try to jam with them. Guitarpicker
You can’t learn “by yourself”. Using a book or a website or an instructional DVD or having a friend show you IS some one else teaching you. Have you ever tried lessons? Learning guitar is not nearly as easy as most people like to think. Over 90% of all people who try to teach themselves end up quitting after a short time due to frustration and lack of direction. A good teacher can show you the proper way to play the instrument correctly and keep you motivated. Another problem with being “self taught” is that the student almost always develops some bad habits that must be unlearned in order to become a better player. I get a lot of students who tried to teach themselves and end up getting very frustrated. When they come to me they often wonder why they waited so long to take lessons. You can learn more in a month or two of lessons than you can in a year of trying to teach yourself gtarczar
