Or is it better to pay for guitar lessons? Or both? I just bought a guitar and really want to learn.

I don’t really have an answer to your question.. sorry :/
But I’m trying to learn guitar on my own (I can’t get lessons right now)..
I just started, but I’ve been using some videos on youtube and they’ve helped.
There’s still some things that are just hard to understand without someone else teaching it to you I think.. but you can try learning it on your own. If you can get lessons it’d probably be really helpful and a lot easier.

Some videos and websites that helped me:

    (this website is really helpful)

There’s a lot more great guitar videos out there if you search for them.. flyleafmusic

if you really have the drive to learn how to play, and you find once you start that you cannot stop playing even though your fingers are in primary pain, then yes, absolutely you can learn with a book and videos

often guitar teachers just teach you chords and songs .. which you can learn from videos

go for it, it honestly depends if you have a passion for it or not. if you find you have a passion then nothing will stop you and you’ll learn. if its just another thing that seems cool to do, then you’ll stop and won’t learn no matter how many lessons you have

(word of advice) - its much more productive to practice even just 15 minutes every day than it is to ignore it for a week and play for 3 hours … you must practice nearly every day or you probably won’t ever learn, just the truth Adam

I’ve been playing for 6 years, and I learned on my own (internet, videos, etc). My motivation came from wanting to learn certain songs. So if you decide to learn from videos and books, then definitely go with something you enjoy. You’ll learn various techniques from various songs.

At times I plateaued, and I bet lessons would help in those cases (I was too cheap to pay for lessons). But I strove to understand some music theory by reading a lot and writing stuff out on paper, and that helped me progress more. weksa
