How to sand the finish off a guitar?

I was thinking about classes but am almost positive I don’t have the money to do so.
Should I learn songs? Chords? Learn to read music? How should I generally approach learning the guitar?

My little lunchbox amp is no longer working, and that also goes for the cable. So I’m planning on getting a Fender Super Champ XD and a Monster Cable. If I go to guitar center. Will they let me try out the Amp with the cable on my current guitar if I brought it there? I haven’t been there in a while, so I’m not sure.
