How can I learn how to play guitar without lesson?

I have an accoustic guitar, and I want to learn how to play it. I can read music, and play intruments just by ear. I have no clue how to do any of the chords of anything. I don’t really want to take lessons, so I was wondering what are some good tips so I could just teach myself the basics.

If you play guitar right handed, then why do you have to do the fretting with your left hand?

What is a good metal song to play in a guitar competition?

What do you think is a reasonable amount of money to pay to get it repaired? Or should I just trash it?
